🇮🇹 Inizialmente costruito come piccola abbazia dipendente dall’Abbazia di Montecassino, il Santuario è stato nominato per la prima volta nel 778 d.C. dal  Duca di Spoleto.Il Santuario di San Donato, situato nel punto più alto del borgo, ha una lunga storia che risale a oltre mille anni fa. Inizialmente costruito come piccola abbazia dipendente dall’Abbazia di Montecassino, il Santuario è stato nominato per la prima volta nel 778 d.C. quando il Duca di Spoleto, Ildebrando, ha concesso la chiesa e il territorio di San Donato al Monastero di San Vincenzo al Volturno.Dall’originale “aecclesia” non esistono tracce a causa delle numerose modifiche e ristrutturazioni che hanno portato all’aspetto attuale del Santuario. Con una lunghezza di 26 metri, larghezza di 12 metri e una cupola alta 18 metri, il Santuario è composto da 3 navate, con gli affreschi più significativi della vita del santo nella navata centrale.Secondo le note presenti nei registri parrocchiali, le ricche decorazioni interne del Santuario sono state realizzate dagli architetti Mastroianni di Roma, Cristoforo Bozzolini e Clemente Forzaretti di Milano intorno al 1780. Nel 1859 è stato costruito il campanile adiacente, alto 17 metri, che è stato ultimato nel 1921. Nel 1915 il Santuario è stato restaurato dall’artista Fiorini di Sora, guidato dal canonico Luigi Ippoliti, che ha anche creato l’inno popolare dedicato a San Donato Vescovo e Martire.Recentemente il Santuario è stato restaurato ancora una volta, con un rinvigorimento dei colori degli affreschi e delle decorazioni interne. Anche la facciata frontale è stata restaurata, riportando alla luce la bellezza originale del Santuario. La venerazione di San Donato dimostra un antico legame che univa il Castrum Sancti Donati con le terre di Toscana ed Umbria e che continua ancora oggi, con donazioni feudali tra Arezzo e Capua.
